Microsoft, which acquired Activision-Blizzard in the past hours, also acquired mobile gaming giant King. The developer, especially known for the Candy Crush series, enabled Microsoft to enter the mobile gaming world. The latest claims are that Microsoft is developing a game store for Android and iOS.
Microsoft may introduce a mobile game store rivaling the App Store and Play Store
Microsoft may be looking to develop its own mobile game store in a move that could shake up the mobile gaming market. The software giant hopes to capitalize on the changes in iOS as it opens up to third-party app stores. In this regard, it is considering marketing its own games as a competitor to the App Store.
The company already has a store called Microsoft Store on Windows devices. It is rumored that this store, which includes both products and software, will be expanded for mobile. It even wants to be the “Steam of mobile” with its new store.
According to sources, the main goal is to offer developers a more attractive option than the restrictive policies of the App Store. Microsoft hopes to lure customers away from the App Store by taking a smaller cut of revenues and leveraging its catalog, which includes Minecraft, Diablo Immortal and Call of Duty Mobile.
It is currently unclear whether this move is real. But the Microsoft Store’s expansion into the mobile world could redress the balance on iOS and Android. It is even possible that games like Minecraft, Candy Crush and Call of Duty Mobile will be removed from the App Store/Play Store.
Microsoft, which bought Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion, will own the most popular mobile game franchises. We will see in time whether the company’s own game store will be realized.
